Greek islands holidays are among the top holiday destinations in the World. And this doesn’t happen by accident. Greece has a great fame for being an awesome tourist destination , and this is due to several factors. The most important of which is, let’s face it, the natural beauty of the land. Surely, Greece has been blessed with amazing landscapes in both its mainland and its islands. And it’s the islands that attract the greatest part of the tourist excluding, of course, the capital Athens. Athens is famous and renowned for its historical sites and its cuisine. Greek cuisine is among the finest in the World and it incorporates elements from ancient Greece, Turkish cuisine and Western cooking in an amazing mix. Greece is also home to very good wine, mainly produced in the mainland, but also in the islands.

As for the islands, there are too many of them for us to mention all of them. But there is a rule of thumb among Greeks that says that the furthest islands are from the mainland, especially from Athens, the better they are. This is mostly due to two factors. First of all, pollution: Athens is a big city and along with its port of Piraeus it somewhat dirties the waters of the Mediterranean around it. Not to a very noticeable extent, but enough that you notice it when you travel further away from the mainland. The other factor is that the closest you are from the mainland, the bigger the chances of people from the mainland taking a ferry to visit the island and completely ruining your peace and quiet.

No Greece holidays are complete without a visit to the most amazing island in the country, that also has the added bonus of being very far away from the mainland, and all the standard of excellence that comes with that. Santorini is an absolutely breathtaking piece of godly art that makes you wonder why you didn’t get there sooner, why you can’t stay longer and how soon you can return. The best times to visit the island are late spring and early autumn, when there are less tourists, both foreign and Greek. Also, during the summer months the island is very hot and sometimes there are some problems with water supply, although that’s never really been a problem in recent years. But don’t take our word for it, go there and see it for yourself.
